Why rimming might add Pleasure to your sex life

When it comes to sexual pleasure, people have different desires and preferences in the bedroom.

A sexual act called rimming has been on the lips of many social media users for a while, especially after rumourmongers started claiming that ‘slay queens’ lead the lavish lifestyles they do as a result of performing this sexual act on men who offer them a life of material things and money.

Although this sexual act may seem new to many people, experts reveal interesting facts about rimming, which is said to be as old as time, to Drum’s sister publication, Move!.

WHAT IS RIMMING?
Dr Marelize Swart, a sexologist based in Cape Town, defines rimming as oral sex that involves licking, tonguing, sucking and kissing someone’s anus.

It may also be referred to as a rim job, which means using the tongue to stimulate the external anus to cause arousal.

Dr Elna Rudolph, a medical doctor, sexologist and clinical head of My Sexual Health, says people are more open to talk about sexual activity now and that is why we are hearing more about it.

“When it gets exposed in the media, people become curious about it and decide to try it in their private lives. It is also common in mainstream pornography, making it more likely that people will see it as ‘normal’ and want to try it.” – Dr Elna Rudolph

Dr Elna says it is not always easy for people to talk about their sexual fantasies.

Trying to introduce something new or talking about doing something different might be hard.

“People don’t find it easy to share their fantasies and asking for something like this might make your partner want to vomit. If it is something you think you might like, you might want to give it first before asking to receive it,” she advises.
The idea of licking someone’s anus for pleasure might be perceived as gross by some people, but it arouses others.

If you consider this to be a pleasurable act for you, it is important to note that it comes with health risks.

Dr Marelize says, “The partner with the active tongue is at risk of contracting intestinal parasites that can cause health problems. HIV transmission to the performer is also possible (although not likely) if there is any blood in the receiver’s rectum that comes into contact with the lining of the mouth.

“Safe rimming can be done using a condom or dental dam.”

According to Dr Elna, you can contract any kind of sexually transmitted infection (STI) from rimming, as well as a host of other illnesses such as Hepatitis A and severe diarrhoea.

She adds that common infections to be picked up during rimming are gonorrhoea in the throat as well Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that can cause cancer.

“How people engage in sexual play is their choice. They just have to be aware of the health risks involved and do what they need to do to minimise the risk.”

PLAYING SAFE

If you want to try rimming, you need to play it safe.

If you want to play in that area, hygiene is everything. Apart from the fact that it might be a terrible experience if your partner is not 100 per cent clean, it can be very dangerous too.

This is the kind of thing that should only happen straight out of the shower or after a hygienic wipe was used.

The safest way to do rimming is to use a dental dam, which is a small square of special silicone applied over the area and then you play on top of it.

It takes away some of the sensation, but itis very safe for both.
