Along Green Villa road in Biogbolo, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, angry youths set a suspected robber on fire. The robber is said to specialize in stealing phones and other valuables.
The event happened on Wednesday about 8.45 p.m., according to locals.
They claimed the guy, who was allegedly in his 30s, was apprehended taking a resident’s cell phone at gunpoint. According to reports, some young people in the neighbourhood chased after him and then caught him.
According to information obtained, the suspect was attacked by the irate youngsters with machetes and other tools before being bound and set ablaze.
According to a different source, the suspect initially succeeded in the operation by firing into the air to scare people away, but he made the mistake of returning to the area where vigilantes caught him.
According to information obtained, the suspect was taken into custody by the vigilante group and turned over to the police sometime in March of this year.
SP Asinim Butswat, the Bayelsa State police spokeswoman who confirmed the incident, decried the mob behavior.
He stated, “On August 17, 2022, at around 2020 hours, a resident of Green Villa Road, Biogbolo, was allegedly confronted by a suspected armed robber who brandished a gun before robbing him of his Android phone.Before the police arrived, an angry mob that had watched the crime ran after the perpetrator, beat him up, and set him on fire.
The command warned members of the public against enforcing the law themselves.
The body was removed and taken to the mortuary for an autopsy. The inquiry is underway.
